Meet the gaming genres we'll all be addicted to next...
Horror
The thrill of a fright-night is, much like a horde of zombies, undying. With devoted fanbases that verge on obsessive, the Horror genre never fails to capture our imaginations. This is helped by talented teams of developers and some truly iconic franchises that have remained relevant for generations - from Resident Evil to Silent Hill - inspiring sequels, reruns and plenty of memes.
The remake of Silent Hill 2 is in its final stage of development and is one of the most anticipated Horror releases of the year. Producer Motoi Okamoto must tread a careful line between giving the beloved game a next-generation facelift while also staying true to the franchise’s faithful original fanbase. Meanwhile, Silent Hill’s original creator Keiichiro Toyama and his team at Bokeh game studio are working on Slitterhead, with fans expecting a twisted experience of sheer terror from the veteran game-maker.
A rising trend we are seeing is games with themes of isolation, that envision highly charged atmospheres to create spooky, solitary single-player experiences. Still Wakes The Deep, from The Chinese Room, invites us to imagine being trapped on an offshore oil rig during a haunting storm on the North Sea.
The key to launching a cult-classic of the genre is building a community of faithful fans online, with games like Kinetic Games’ Phasmophobia spreading like the plague among streamers on Twitch.
